Spirit Cooking: What Is It?

Spirit Cooking, a form of ritual where pigs blood (possibly human blood), fresh breast milk and fresh sperm is used to act as a medium connecting spirits to the material world.

Usually, spirit cooking is performed in the kitchen as it considered the “heart” of the home. The ceremony is conducted to provide some form of energy to feed the spirits by converting the blood.

Marina believes that spirits also need food, and since it cannot be delivered physically, the conversion into light, sound, or emotions can connect them to the food. 

Crowley Ritual: Origins of Spirit Cooking

Spirit cooking was first introduced by the contents of a ‘cake of light‘. This form of ritual is a prelude ceremony in a religion created by Aleister Crowley called Thelema.

When partaking in this ceremony and consuming the cake, it was suppose to create a connection between Man and the eternal.

Ingredients to a Cake of Light:

Honey, oil, menstrual blood and sperm.

Marina Abramovic shed light on spirit cooking with John Podesta’s emails, she tends to use blood to write some statements on the wall. It is believed that the video was not only an artistic performance but also a cult ritual.

She tries to explain some of the recipes used in the spirit cooking rituals. “Mix fresh breast milk with fresh sperm” statement clearly describes what you need to have while preparing for the spirit cooking ritual.

“Cut the middle finger and eat the pain” shows what needs to be done on the night of the ritual. Marina has also published a book on the ritual, and you can well find more details on the spirit cooking recipes and procedures. (1)

Marina argues that the ritual intent is based on the context on which is performed. For instance, if it is performed in a gallery, a song or a video then it is simply an art.

However, if it is conducted in a private setting, a home, institution, or an organization, then the ritual is more intimate and more of a spiritual ceremony.

In such a case, the members are intended to communicate with the spirits and feeding them as a way of adorning them to answer their wishes. Spirit cooking has been associated with some evil practices such as cannibalism and has since been categorized as a cult. (2)

The ritual became popular when Marina said that she was performing the ceremony in her home. She even invited all people who donated to her kickstarter campaign.

However, she strongly disputes the claims that she is satanic, and everything she does is only spiritual. (3)

Religion however, does not believe in this kind of a ritual and strongly argues against it with some religious leaders arguing that it is entirely satanic and people should not be associated with it.

Spiritual leaders argue that people should refrain from rituals they unsure about, especially those that they do not understand why they are conducted and why they are performed. You could as well choose to refrain from it if you do not find any intent in it.
